Dedicated to American Pilot, Amelia Earhart (1897-1937)
Suffragette of the Skies, for Grade 5 SATB and String Orchestra, brings Amelia Earhart’s famous 1932 transatlantic solo flight to life. The long journey from the US to Europe had never been attempted by a woman pilot, and despite a fuel leakage problem and a dangerous and icy electrical storm that veered her off course, Amelia landed in a pasture in Ireland, proving to women around the world that it could be done. Regarding the transatlantic flight, Amelia said, “It was, in measure, a self-justification — proving to me, and to any one else interested, that a woman with adequate experience could do it.”
This composition was commissioned by the New Canon Project, a partnership between the American Choral Directors Association, the American String Teachers Association, and Rising Tide Music & Arts, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts through their “Celebrating America250” initiative in accordance with Executive Order 13978.
